Loko Ia- Native Hawaiian Fishponds

Title

Loko Ia- Native Hawaiian Fishponds

Description

In addition to Dr. Kikuchi's contributions to educating students at Kauai Community College and cultural heritage management, he made life long contributions to the study and understanding of Native Hawaiian fishponds. In 1973, he successfully completed his doctor of philosophy at the University of Arizona after defending his dissertation in the study of Native Hawaiian aquaculture systems. During this time, he surveyed fishponds on Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii islands which resulted in many original fishpond drawings and diagrams. From this point forward, he continued to research and present his findings on fishponds for the rest of his career, making valuable contributions, for example, to the understanding and restoration of the famous Alekoko, also known as Menehune, fishpond on Kauai. Many of his original fishpond notes, diagrams, maps and figures can be found here within this collection.
